Umbau | Neubau Diözesane Musikschule St.Gallen 2009 – 2010

The small music school is located next to the monastery in the historic city center of St.Gallen. The new structure replaces partly an old yard building added in back of a main housing complex. The concept for the new intervention respects the existing hierarchy between the main front building and the secondary structure in the back. The irregular shape derives form the perimeter of the existing lot that follows the narrow alley of the old town. The poligonal shaped footprint was the starting point for the elaborated section. Result is a small size, custom made, irregular shack its volume merges perfectly with the site. The new semi-public functions of the music school are structured into two floors: the groundfloor with the existing concrete columns and beams accomm date the rooms for single and group lessons, the entry and a small gathering hall.
